Thoughts of Cold in Thailand…

by wonderfullyrich on August 30, 2006

What do YOU do when your bored in Bangkok? What else but read about someplace cold…

Many of my friends from last year on the ice are heading back down or are already down on the ice again this year and I’ll have to admit it’s amazingly difficult not to be sick with envy when you see a “badass antarctic picture” or even the box of chocolates and sundries being packed for a year of solitary. I console myself with the fact that I’m in Thailand and enjoying the good weather and the glorious cheap pad thai! As I said to Mykle however, it’s seem as though they got the better end of the bargain.

It’s ludicrous to be envying people who want to spend their next year in a place as cold and forbidding as Antarctica, but for those of us who’ve been there it’s just about the only place you want to be if you have your choice. No matter how ridiculous it got, no matter how fed up with the politics or the policies or the food, as soon as you left the ice you know why you love it. I suppose for those of you who’ve never been, this will be of little consequence, but think about your indian summer and imagine it cold and your getting close. :)

I have no plans of going back this year, only the tantalizing memories of frozen rabbit ears which will drive me back in a few years. Perhaps by then raytheon will no long hold the contract… or one can only hope.

Perhaps now is the time to mention that I’m expected in Washington DC. I have a tentative job lined up working for the Friends National Committee on Legislation (FCNL or www.fcnl.org) as the resident PC tech and computer guru. My start date is the 15th so I’ve got to be back in the states and over my jet lag in time to meet that deadline. As of right now I am not going to be stopping in denver on my way home, however if things work out I’ll obviously be retrieving my stuff after some period of time so I’ll be back…
